Functional characteristics of sodium channels in Lygus lineolaris and Lygus hesperus from Xenopus Oocytes expression system

The tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) and the western tarnished plant bug (Lygus hesperus) are economically significant pests known for damaging a wide range of crops in the southeastern and southwestern regions of the USA, respectively. Sodium channels are essential for the generation and propagation of action potentials in insect neurons, making them attractive targets for pyrethroid insecticides. However, the effectiveness of pyrethroids is seriously threatened by knockdown resistance (kdr), and understanding the functional characteristics of sodium channels in these pests is crucial for elucidating the molecular basis of resistance mechanisms. Using the Xenopus oocytes expression system, this study elucidated the sodium channel gating properties, pharmacological sensitivity to structurally different pyrethroids, and species-specific differences of sodium channels in L. lineolaris, L. hesperus and the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.). This study highlights the importance of understanding species-specific responses to structurally different pyrethroids at molecular level, which is crucial for the rational design of pyrethroids with enhanced efficacy and reduced non-target effects.
