Monitoring and mating disruption of Cryptophlebia moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in Hawaii

Cryptophlebia ombrodelta (macadamia nut borer) and C. illepida (koa seedworm) Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) are nut-feeding pests of macadamia in Hawaii. Infestations of these moths cause considerable economic damage to macadamia nuts. Updated information on its phenology across the macadamia growing areas in Hawaii is lacking; and options for managing these pests are limited. Efforts are underway to monitor the flight phenology of Cryptophlebia moths across multiple commercial macadamia orchards on Hawaii Island using pheromone-baited delta traps. In addition, preliminary studies on mating disruption of C. ombrodelta, the most common species, are currently ongoing. Results from these studies will be presented and discussed within the context of developing IPM programs for Cryptophlebia moths in Hawaiian macadamia orchards.
