Attractive toxic sugar baits with chemicals are known to be effective in controlling mosquitoes. Given the rising concerns about insecticide resistance and environmental impact, the search for alternative solutions is important. Research in our laboratory has demonstrated that two industrial minerals derived from volcanic rock and fossilized diatoms are effective in killing mosquitoes, flies, and ticks. Thus, we developed sugar-baited lethal traps with industrial minerals and tested the efficacy of controlling mosquitoes in both small cages and large walk-in cages. Laboratory assays were also conducted to determine the oral and contact toxicity of industrial minerals in mosquitoes using the sugar-insecticide feeding disruption test (FDT).
