Sociality is a defining feature of numerous bee lineages, but the role of this behavior in governing the distribution of bee biodiversity is relatively poorly-known. Prior works such as those by Michener have discussed the distribution of bee sociality in a qualitative framework, and here we build on this with the first global exploration of where social bee species are found using an unprecedented global trait dataset. We map out different levels of sociality and compare their prevalence at the global scale, with special focus on latitudinal differences between groups. The causes and consequences of these dynamics will be discussed.
