Major sociological and economic trends indicate that professional societies are in decline, academia is losing funding and respect, and camaraderie and trust within science are disappearing. Specific examples are members abandoning large scientific societies, losses in tenured university jobs, rare development of innovative solutions in IPM, inappropriate use of journal impact factor, and reduced interest in reviewing manuscripts for journals. However, there are signs that early-career scientists are attempting to counteract these trends. The Forum is sponsored by the Annals of the Entomological Society of America.
