Lessons learned using AI to translate educational manuals

Recently, the EPA developed a path to approve Spanish language pesticide labels. Even though not all parts of these labels need to be in Spanish, this creates a challenge for state Pesticide Safety Education Programs (PSEP) to provide training materials in other languages for non-English speaking pesticide applicators. Traditionally, this is done using professional translation services, but for some states PSEP programs this is prohibitively expensive. While there are other web-based translation tools, AI is a more powerful tool to that can be used to translate materials to more specific dialects and reading levels. However, AI does not always provide accurate translations. I will discuss how I use AI to translate pesticide safety education materials and verify that the translations are accurate. This methodology might be used to translate training into many different languages.
