Discovery of the first gall-inducing mordellid in North America

Artemisia vulgaris L., a non-native plant in Eastern North America, has recently been observed to have previously undescribed stem galls in several states in the Northeast. We have shown that mordellids that we have reared from overwintering mugwort galls as well as field-caught mordellids associated with mugwort plants, have the capacity to induce stem gall formation on A. vulgaris. Mordellids have previously been reported to be associated with stem galls on A. indica var. maximowiczii in Japan, and we have also found stem galls with associated mordellids on A. indica in South Korea. The mordellid galls in Japan and North Korea are strikingly similar in morphology to those found on A. vulgaris in Eastern North America. The mordellids from North American A. vulgaris galls are being compared to mordellids associated with stem galls from South Korea and Japan using molecular and morphological techniques.
