I have a friend who left entomology and became a landscape gardener. She applies her scientific background and passion for biology to create incredible outdoor spaces. She once told me that a common mistake when building a path is to make it just wide enough for one person to walk. But paths are best enjoyed with another person. The same can be said about career paths. If we are lucky, at some point, our single path joins that of a significant other. How do we construct and follow this shared path, and what compromises should we expect to make? The good thing is the network of paths offered by a career in Entomology is incredibly diverse. Having the flexibility to adapt and find opportunities outside of our core expertise can have significant rewards. We all start in academia, but there are endless opportunities to build new paths to exciting places worldwide. Looking back, I am grateful for every tough decision that enabled me to build a path with my partner. We still have a few pavers to lay, but the journey has been an adventure, and I never imagined that I would end up here.
