As a result of global climate change, average temperatures have increased and daily temperature ranges have decreased: these changes have been found to be partly more due to increasing daily minimum temperatures than increasing maximum temperatures. Additionally, periods of high, stressful daily temperatures (heat waves) are becoming more frequent and intense. However, ecological studies on the consequences of extreme high temperatures have largely focused on uniform warming or daytime warming only, which may be insufficient for evaluating the effects of more chronic warming. The present work examined how different levels of night warming affected Manduca sexta larval development and adult fitness to determine how recovery from stressful daytime temperatures could be affected by warming nighttime temperatures.
