Turfgrass as a crop is a unique and complex system for research and pest management. Turfgrass is a perennial crop with mostly aesthetic and functional value, and as a result, the research is predominately industry-funded. At the same time, the IPM of insect-pests in turfgrass recently faces multiple challenges, such as pest resistance development, loss of insecticide active ingredients because of pest resistance and changing regulations, lack of effective alternatives to chemical control, and zero-tolerance to insect damage. This talk will address the challenges and the impact of applied research in the turfgrass system.
