This presentation explores innovative teaching methods, communication, and engagement strategies valuable for a career in Extension. For students considering an Extension career path, building up communication and engagement skills can set help a student’s job application stand out. This presentation will cover crucial skills needed for careers in Extension including relationship-building across disciplines, informal science writing, verbal communication, teaching youth and adult audiences, reaching underserved audiences, and more. Examples of Extension programming including opportunities to engage communities in applied research will be included. Entomology has a role in many of the programming priority areas in Extension (e.g. horticulture, natural resources, agriculture, 4-H, Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, and more), and students have an opportunity to bring research-based education to local communities and solve problems for sustainable future.
