Systematic Entomology Laboratory: Research, information, service

Systematics at SEL deals with the classification, identification, and elucidation of phylogenetic relationships of insects and mites. SEL is also responsible for the active growth and curation of the National Insect and Mite Collection (NIMC; Smithsonian Institution), helping to maintain this unique spatiotemporal database of 36 million specimens. Research on systematics and taxonomy underpin all aspects of biological sciences, e.g. conservation, ecosystem services, agriculture, forestry, and sustainability. Additionally, SEL works closely with APHIS to support biosecurity by identifying insects and mites intercepted at our borders in commodities. SEL averages ~12,000 identifications annually from port-of-entry interceptions. We discuss the annualized value of systematics knowledge compared to the annual costs of running USDA’s systematics laboratories, (e.g. SEL) relative to return on investment. Finally, we highlight a long-term collaboration with the US Forest Service across several high-impact projects. Research makes identification possible, identification enhances communication and communication leads to solutions.
