D3035: Neural correlations of sleep behavior in Apis mellifera in the context of olfactory learning

Sleep plays a vital role in the cognitive functionality of various species, as all of the information collected during the day is filtered and consolidated during sleep at night or vice versa for nocturnal species. This process is believed to be critical for continual learning in animals. The honey bee, Apis mellifera, are no exception to this ubiquitous function, and current research aims at revealing the neurological correlations with sleep behavior, thus providing biological insights for machine learning algorithms which currently lack the capacity of continual learning. Taking advantage of the well-established learning protocols and an easily accessible brain in honey bees, a silicon-based multichannel probe can be used to record neural activities within the primary olfactory center of the brain, antenna lobe (AL), over 24 hours, with olfactory learning tasks before and after sleep. Sleep events are identified through characteristic antennal positioning in the 24hr video recordings. Current results show a positive correlation between the antenna movement (behavioral) and neural activity (neurological) during the sleep phases, as they increase and decrease in frequency during wakeful and sleeping periods. Further research will look into understanding the different phases of sleep determined, as well as whether the behavioral activity influences the neurological activity or vice versa.
