Biological control of pest arthropods unique to controlled environment agriculture: Exploring the full continuum of technologies

High tunnels (HTs) allow farmers to expand production through season extension, improve crop quality by protecting crops from rain, and mitigate catastrophic losses from unpredictable weather conditions caused by climate change. Passively heated and cooled HTs are the most accessible technology within a continuum of Controlled Environment Agriculture technologies and are distinct from open culture and greenhouse production, which each have unique pest management challenges. Here we explore how management techniques influence abiotic conditions in unheated HTs, and we evaluate cold tolerance and performance of predators released for augmentation biological control winter grown spinach.
