The Better Common Names Committee has been working on evaluating a list of names submitted by the ESA membership. The list includes names that have geographic references, colors, honorific names, racial or ethnic slurs, and other potentially problematic words. This talk will include the reasons for looking at these names, lessons learned from Lymantria dispar (spongy moth the insect formerly called gypsy moth), rationale behind priority of names, and the top down and bottom-up approaches being used by the committee to address the list.
