Captivated and curious: Taking on the challenge of educating disinterested audiences

As an urban entomologist, I specialize in educating people about bed bugs, cockroaches, head lice, ants, ticks, and termites, among other things. My subject matter leaves much to be desired and what I say can make people feel uncomfortable. In this presentation, I will share the challenges encountered during my time with Extension as a public-facing entomologist, housed in a county office, and accountable to over three quarters of a million people. Discussions include storytelling to connect, practicing empathy, and active engagement using creative educational tools.
