The coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Curculionidae: Coleoptera), is one of the most damaging and widespread pests of coffee. Attempts to suppress it using biological control are continuing. Among the most studied of its natural enemies are two bethylid wasps, Prorops nasuta Waterston and Cephalonomia stephanoderis Betrem, and a eulophid, Phymasthicus coffea La Salle. Of these, only C. stephanoderis (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) has been found in Puerto Rico. It was introduced after undergoing host specificity studies at the Agricultural Experiment Station of Adjuntas. It is a solitary ectoparasitoid that feeds on all immature states of the CBB and oviposits on the larval and pupal stages. Observations during routine laboratory rearing suggested that field-collected individuals might be more active in foraging and host attacks than lab-reared adults. We thus experimentally compared the parasitism and predation behaviors of field and lab-reared females when presented with CBB larvae and pupae in the laboratory, under 25 ͦ C and 12:12 h photoperiod. We observed predation and oviposition behavior for one hour, followed by seven daily assessments of oviposition and predation. Field-reared females exhibited more significant predation of CBB, while lab-reared females attained higher oviposition rates, possibly due to maintained strains adapting to laboratory conditions during the previous 13 generations. While successful oviposition is ultimately the more important attribute in recruiting parasitoids into the next generation, a concern is that laboratory-maintained strains may lose reduced foraging abilities.
