Phylogenomics and diversification dynamics of dragonflies and damselflies revealed using extensive taxon sampling and targeted enrichment

Odonata comprise approximately 6400 species with extensive morphological and ecological diversity, specifically their flight behavior patterns and breadth of ecological niches. Additionally, their phylogenetic placement within Insecta as descendents of the first winged insects make them ideal candidates for exploring evolutionary forces that have shaped diversity patterns (e.g., diversification rate shifts) as well as character evolution (e.g., flight behavior). Even though morphological and ecological traits are relatively well known for most odonate taxa, the lack of a well supported phylogenetic hypothesis across Odonata have limited the capability of evaluating evolutionary phenomena in a comparative context. To resolve this, we employed a targeted enrichment approach to construct a phylogeny with extensive taxon sampling, to include at least one representative from 65% of odonate genera, and estimated divergence times across the phylogeny. This evolutionary framework was then used to evaluate diversification dynamics of dragonflies and damselflies by inferring the biogeographic history and using state-dependent speciation and extinction (SSE) models. We identify key geological events and evolution of particular traits (i.e., wing aspect ratio and wing area as a proxy for flight behavior strategies) that have potentially driven odonate diversification over the past 300 Mya.
