Blood feeding and transfluthrin exposure on Aedes aegypti

Spatial repellents are quickly gaining ground as a form of chemical control to disrupt vector behavior and reduce contact between humans and vector populations with lower risk of inducing insecticide resistance. Here we present results of the effect of transfluthrin exposure on blood feeding behavior of Aedes aegypti by modifying a standardized repellency bioassay test. Initially, Ae. aegypti were exposed for 30 min. to transfluthrin, then provided a blood feeding source for 30 min while still exposed to transfluthrin (60 min total). Our results show that transfluthrin exposure can reduce blood feeding behavior of Ae. aegypti at relatively high concentrations in the bioassay, with ~60% feeding in the control, versus ~30% feeding in the highest concentration (0.60 ug/cm2) when correcting for knockdown at 30 min post-transfluthrin exposure. This study presents a novel system through which blood feeding status can be evaluated while exposing mosquitoes to candidate repellent molecules. We hope that additional behavioral research will proceed from these results and the novel blood feeding bioassay that we present here.
