The academic field of medical entomology is characterized by the study of insects and other arthropods and their negative impacts on human health. Many aspects of medical entomology overlap with public health and clinical medicine. A curated selection of scholarly research articles will be highlighted at the 2024 meeting of the Entomological Society of America. Articles have been categorized into (i) advances in clinical medicine related to arthropod-caused or transmitted disease, (ii) new or emerging vector-borne diseases, (iii) updates on malaria, dengue, and Lyme disease, (iv) innovative vector-borne disease control, (v) advances in vector identification and taxonomy, (vi) effects of climate change on vectors, (vii) updates on surveillance, and (viii) vector competence, all with the goal of presenting updates on new and emerging threats and innovative methodologies for prevention, treatment, and control. Many of the selected studies are perhaps more clinical in nature compared to previous Highlights presentations, representing myriad disease conditions caused by, or transmitted by, arthropods (both their direct and indirect effects).
