Pest problems in rice, Oryza sativa, are changing globally because of climate change, changes in crop production practices, and globalization. As a consequence, pest management practices in rice are also evolving. Rice in the U.S. is facing challenges from invasive insect pests (e.g., Mexican rice borer, rice delphacid) as well as new pests that have arisen due to changes in crop production practices (rice billbug). This paper will discuss changes in pest management practices in U.S. rice in light of global trends. Emphasis will be placed on management tactics that are both sustainable and cost-effective, such as host-plant resistance.
