Research updates on biological control of emerald ash borer

The emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) has caused widespread mortality of ash trees in North America. First discovery in Michigan in 2002, EAB has now spread to 36 states causing significant ecological and economic impacts. The USDA has developed a robust biological control program and has been mass rearing and releasing biological control agents since 2007. This presentation will cover the latest research updates and next steps for the EAB biological control program. We will highlight research on ongoing integrated pest management studies in both urban and forested areas as well as research on the persistence and impact of parasitoids in aftermath forests following a crash in the EAB population. We’ll also outline the updated guidelines for releasing Oobius agrili, Tetrastichus planipennisi, Spathius agrili and Spathius galinae and provide updates on optimizing rearing and recovery of these biocontrol agents.
