Insect decline nationally and globally is a growing existential crisis. The 2019 ESA meeting in St. Louis organized a deep dive into the status of insect decline, so to kick this session off, the symposium will reflect on what changes have been seen in scientific and public perceptions since that time. But there are many ways entomologists, other scientific societies, industry, and the government can help incrementally. This day-long symposium will look at activities currently underway within ESA, effective communication strategies for engaging policymakers and the public on ways they can help address the decline, with the intent of empowering the audience with ways their science can help this growing body of work. The day will end with a workshop on how individuals from agricultural, public health, forestry, and other sectors can help share their data to create a more robust body of knowledge about the current state of insects in North America and beyond.
