Mating Disruption for Control of Insect Pests

Eggplant shoot and fruit borer management with mating disruption in Bangladesh

Eggplant fruit and shoot borer, Leucinodes orbonalis is one of the most prevalent and destructive pests of eggplant in Bangladesh and all across Asia. Farmers in Bangladesh routinely spray a broad spectrum of insecticides 2-3 times per week to combat this pest. Despite these applications, farmers lose anywhere from 30%-60% of their yields due to eggplant fruit and shoot borer, resulting in more pesticide sprays, higher residues on fruits, and even pest resurgence, with outbreaks of secondary pests as well as destruction of the eggplant fruit and shoot borer’s natural enemies. Ultimately, the cost of insecticide treatments accounts for a substantial portion of the total cost of cultivation of eggplant. While Bangladesh has approved the development of the Bt eggplant crop genetically modified to resist eggplant fruit and shoot borer — not all locally preferred varieties have been produced. Thus, the eggplant fruit and shoot borer remains a growing problem for farmers. In collaboration with national and international research organizations and private industries, the local extension division, and collaborating farmers, two mating disruption experiments were conducted at Magura and Mymansingh areas of Bangladesh. Even though initial results were encouraging, further studies are needed to ensure efficacy, economics, acceptance, and adoptability of this technology under local conditions.
