D3223: Analyses of the fine structures in Membracidae (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha)

Membracidae is a diverse group in Hemiptera known for its extremely exaggerated pronotums. Little research has been conducted on the phylogenetic history and morphology of this family as opposed to Cicadellidae, a destructive pest of agricultural goods. This comparative study is the first to examine the fine integumental structures of Membracidae with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). SEM images focused on the antennae and pronotum structures. The results showed that the pronotum has many distinguishing structures related to the presence or absence of pits and setae and that the scape of the antennae exhibits the most variety among the three antennal segments. This study revealed new and exciting findings for this lesser studied insect family.
