Over the last forty-five years much has changed in America. We have seen seven US presidents, fought several wars, and continued to struggle with the development and admittance of women and those who are different in many fields of science. Yet, through all the international turmoil and bravado there has been one constant: Michael Haverty and his mentorship of young scientists irrespective of their background. Mike’s love and passion for science is obvious when first meeting him. He also has a high bar for science excellence. However, what sets him apart is his ability to see the potential in others, especially those who may on the surface do not fit the traditional model of what a scientist should look like. He has freely given advice, research ideas, resources, and helped to write and edit draft papers for many early career scientists. In today’s symposium we honor Michael Haverty and hear the stories from many he has mentored through the decades.
