Defining species boundaries in the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) through integrated approaches

The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren; Hymenoptera: Formicidae) poses significant challenges to human health and agriculture, yet taxonomic ambiguity, particularly the lack of clear species boundaries, impedes effective management strategies. This study comprehensively reasses the taxonomy of S. invicta, utilizing both traditional morphological analyses and cutting-edge genomic techniques such as genome skimming. By leveraging the extensive collections at CMAVE in Gainesville, FL, and incorporating type specimens and novel material from the Buren collection, this interdisciplinary endeavor aims to redefine the species concept of S. invicta within the Solenopsis saevissima complex. At the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), genome skimming methodologies tailored for museum specimens will be employed to generate high-quality genomic data.

Drawing upon expertise in genomic analysis and ant taxonomy, this collaboration seeks to establish a robust taxonomic framework based on morphological and molecular data. Anticipated outcomes include the development of a molecular database linked to voucher specimens, which will facilitate future research and management initiatives. Moreover, diagnostic characters derived from this study will enhance Solenopsis invicta identification at ports of entry, enabling targeted control measures. By delivering tangible outcomes, this research will pave the way for more effective management strategies in combating the challenges posed by RIFA.
