Louisiana has a diverse agricultural landscape where a variety of beneficial insects reside. These insects play a crucial role as the natural enemies against insect pests and diseases, enhancing crop health and contributing to sustainable agriculture. They belong to several orders and families, with distinct roles and benefits. Insects like ladybugs, ground beetles from order Coleoptera, praying mantisof order Mantidaeand green lacewings of order Neuropteraare predators of many soft-bodiedinsect pests, spiders, snails, and slugs, contributing to the protection of crop plants, reducing the need for chemical pesticides, and increasing crop yields and biodiversity. Beessuch as western honeybees, bumble bees and carpenter bees are important pollinators of the environment. Some parasitic wasps belonging to the familiesEulophidae, Braconidae, andTrichogrammatidaeparasitize lepidopterous larvae and eggs.By highlighting the diversity and ecological functions of these natural enemies, this presentation encourages the need for their conservation and necessary management strategies for a healthy and sustainable agricultural system in Louisiana.
