D3355: Effects of resistance to Bt proteins Cry1Ac and Vip3Aa on flight behavior of Helicoverpa zea

Crops genetically engineered to produce insecticidal proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis are used to manage insect pests, including Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), one of the most damaging pests of many crops throughout the Americas. In the U.S., widespread practical resistance to crops producing Bt crystalline (Cry) proteins. Furthermore, and early warnings of resistance to Bt crops producing the vegetative insecticidal protein Vip3Aa have been reported for H. zea. The long-distance flight behavior of H. zea is also of concern for the potential spread of resistance. Here, we used rotational flight mills to compare several H. zea flight parameters for trios of strains that included related pairs of strains that were resistant or susceptible to Cry1Ac or Vip3Aa, as well as a laboratory strain that was susceptible to all Bt proteins. The results suggest that resistance to Cry1Ac or Vip3Aa was not associated with fitness costs reducing the number of flights, flight speed, or flight duration. However, resistance to Vip3Aa was associated with lower survival of males during the flight tests. Such flight data may be useful to consider for resistance management of this important pest.
