Spread of Gryon aetherium and its host Bagrada hilaris in California

The invasive stinkbug Bagrada hilaris was first found in southern California in 2008 and has since spread through the southwestern US, Mexico and Chile from its native southern Asia. Bagrada hilaris attacks a wide variety of wild and cultivated Brassicaceae, causing significant economic damage for growers. In 2020, parasitoid Gryon aetherium was first detected in California, parasitizing B. hilaris eggs. The parasitoid has since spread through California, both naturally and with human assistance. Here we report on the current distribution and status of B. hilaris and G. aetherium in California.
